Mothology

This is a blog where Ben Knox Miller provides juicy morsels of information from his work with Luke Randall on a strobe moth sculpture / machine, and the subsequent Moth-parties raging across Rhode Island. Work began in the fall of 2011 and will continue until the moth-god appears at happenings across the human world.

“Happy Moth-ers Day” iPhone pics. there’s no effects on these. just the way the iPhone writes it’s images I guess.

now that it’s spring look out for some outdoor Moth-flights ::::)

It’s a Moth-party in Brooklyn tonight!

Dear Moth-family (New York branch),

Many of you have written to the program with probing questions such as, “what are you doing?” and “what is a Moth-machine?” and “but I thought this was a joke or something.” We always appreciate hearing from you and regret that we haven’t been able to respond personally to all of these questions or allay confusion in any way…

UNTIL NOW:

The Moth Machine’s First (Public) Flight

The zoetrope (the Moth-machine) will be flown publicly for the first time on Thursday, May 3 in Jamestown, RI.  Like a wild stallion, this gorilla party-on-legs has been broken, leashed and given it’s shots.  It will be formally appearing as part of the Technocraft show at the Jamestown Arts Center.  The show features craft art that is based in tech…as the name suggests. A few band members will perform briefly. Luke Randall will be featuring many of his wonderful inventions.

It’s fl*ckering real

Dear Moth-friends,

It began last late summer as a day dream and it’s now fl*ckering real. The Moth-machine is finished. The necessary flight simulations were completed in Providence’s historic Columbus Theater. Flight was unspeakably gorgeous.

Sketchy Moth-dream

Finished Moth-machine

Because my iPhone camera does NOT do justice, local filmmaker Rob Houlihan is working on a proper video for web premier. But really, this moth-machine is intended for real live viewing by live human types. After all, it is a trick of the eye and of the brain that gives fluid life to this night-ghost. Therefore I would like to announce that the M-m will be making public appearances beginning next week on a Rhode Island guerilla tour.

So where does a M-m fly? you’re probably wondering. Truth is, I’m as new to this as you are, and all I can say is keep an eye out in the dark storefronts of Providence and Newport, the forgotten alleys, dark empty fields, rooftops, and be on the look out for guerilla-techs in moth-wings. Like any phantom, the M-m is moody - pure stealth. But fortunately this phantom has access to facebook and twitter. Announcements are coming.

For now it’s good bye Randall’s Moth-shop…

So much love and thanks to:

Lukee McDonald Randall - for his improbable devotion to magic and the urgency of whim. For reminding me that since we create our own realities, devoting six months to building a M-m instead of running for president or trying to make money doesn’t mean you need to seek counseling.

Teak Ackman (shaper of metals) because every Moth-work requires at least someone with a firm mind and steady hand.

Orlando - for your great skills and good cheer.

Erin - brainy beauty of my heart, cutter of pokey wings

Jeff - radionics consultant

Oliver - when permitted to be useful by loving father

Russell - for bending a wheel with Jedi precision

Emily - wielder of paint

Ainsley Kass - graphic artist of melty mothbrain

Yuri - tripod consultant

Anna - donator of futuristic comic strip

Jon Berberian - owner of the Columbus Theatre and current gracious host of the stroboscopic Moth-machine

Yelena, Lisa - patient and loving family of artist

Low Anthem members JesusPrystowsky, JJaegerMistressA, Ty-vek, Mikey Jordan, KateLovedau, El Rud Hubbard, Dr. Grahambeard - thank you for putting up with endless Moth-talk. aka: your faith while drawn into mothy darkness.

all dreaming Moth-dreams I’m sure

the cake has been eated

So glad you all tuned in. See you at a flight soon. Love!!!

- Benny Knox signing off

SNEAK PEEK

Dear Moth-machine,

When I first saw your glimmering poles and flappy wings, I knew that we were made for each other. I know it sounds cheesy, but getting to know you over these past few months has changed and opened my heart. The bud is back on the vine, music in the air. Last night as we danced in the flickery strobebeams of passion how your false-eyes did shine. How I did mend you a love-bracelet of hemp, that bestowed on aluminium forelimb didst bob and weave on the tides of eternal distance…under a jealous moon. How the droves of tanned mink did gather curiously to our window’s edge, wherest aghast and enthralled didst onlook inst to the ever forge of our love. Oh Moth-machine, oh ghost, oh figment dream, I am yours and yours to keep.

love,

Benny “Strobey Juan Kenobi” Knox
